How To Clean A Vintage Dress

How To Clean A Vintage Dress

Vintage dresses are beautiful but can often be bought in a less than desirable condition. Sometimes, all it takes is a bit of TLC to restore a piece to its original glory. This tutorial suits most vintage dresses, but if you have any doubts about your item, I would recommend googling the specific materials your item is made, and whether they can withstand being washed in this way, to ensure you do not cause any damage to the item.

  1. Check your dress over and see if there is any damage to the garment. If you are going to repair or alter the garment, you should do this before you wash it. You don't want to worsen any existing damage in the washing process then have to repair it even more!
  2. Fill a sink or bath tub with cold clean water. A large sink is preferable, as you will need room to properly rinse out the dress.
  3. Leave the dress to soak in the water for 3-4 hours.

  5. Rinse with lukewarm water (be careful to not use hot water to avoid colour running)
  6. Handwash the dress in the lukewarm water using a gentle fabric detergent.
  7. Leave to soak for 10-20 minutes.

  8. Rinse off the detergent, drain the sink or bath and hang the dress up to dry on a hanger.
